Chanterelles

If anyone reading this is a mushroom hunter (I wonder if anyone does read this blog) I'm happy to report that it looks like its going to be a good year for mushrooms here in Northern New England. I've been picking mushrooms for over 20 years and its usually boom or bust and the last few years have been busts. Yesterday however, I picked a quart of nice chanterelles on a short walk near the house. Its early for them here and they are probably my favorite wild mushroom. I also found a couple of overgrown chestnut boletes (very tasty as well) and a clean lobster mushroom.

Next to come I hope will be the black trumpets and the porcini mushrooms. If we get some tropical rain towards the end of the month it could be a banner year.

I'm on vacation and will probably make a mushroom omlette for lunch. If we get quantities this year, I'll pickle some of them. Chanterelles and slippery jacks make great pickles to have in the winter with your baked beans and brown bread.
